Jamestown's industrial base is older and deeper than most southwestern New York outsiders realize, and the network that supports it has to respect that history. The city built its name on furniture and metalworking, and the descendants of that economy (the heavy-engine line at the Cummins plant in Lakewood, the bearing work at SKF, vehicle-lighting and components at Truck-Lite in Falconer, motion hardware at Weber Knapp, corrugated at Jamestown Container) still run real production floors with real controllers on them. Network and server infrastructure for a Chautauqua County manufacturer is not the same project as wiring a downtown professional office near Third Street and the Reg Lenna Center, and MCR Business Tech Solutions designs each around the operation in front of it rather than a one-size template.

On the plant side, the governing decision is keeping operational technology off the same flat network as the front office. Production controllers, HMI panels, label and barcode systems, and the machine-integration servers that feed ERP and inventory do not belong one broadcast domain away from email-reading desktops, guest Wi-Fi, and the lobby cameras. We build segmented VLANs with a firewall enforcing deny-by-default between the floor and the office, and we open only the specific industrial protocols (Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, OPC UA) that genuinely need to cross, on documented ports. The Purdue-model layering that large plants take for granted scales down cleanly to a 40-person Chautauqua County shop, and the ransomware-containment payoff is identical.

Geography shapes the rest of the design. Jamestown business activity runs south down the Route 60 corridor through Falconer and Lakewood, west toward Mayville and the Westfield grape belt, and across the state line into the closely-linked Warren and Erie County economies, so multi-site is the norm rather than the exception here. We tie those locations together with site-to-site VPN or SD-WAN under a single identity layer and one file share, so a desk in Falconer behaves exactly like a desk downtown and the cross-border NY/PA footprint reads as one network, not two vendors stapled together. Where downtown's repurposed older buildings hide decades of unlabeled cabling, we assess the actual in-wall plant with proper test gear before designing the Cat6A, fiber, and survey-driven Wi-Fi 6 paths the building can really support.
