Most small offices start out on whatever unmanaged switch was cheapest at the time, and for the first handful of devices that is genuinely fine. The trouble starts as the business grows. Guest phones, security cameras, VoIP handsets, a card reader, and a dozen laptops all end up on one flat network with no separation and no visibility. When something goes wrong (a call that breaks up, a camera that drops off nightly, a machine that infects the share drive) there is nothing to look at, because an unmanaged switch cannot tell you anything.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a managed and unmanaged switch?

An unmanaged switch just forwards traffic; you cannot configure it, segment it, or see what is happening on it. A managed switch lets you build VLANs, prioritize voice traffic, lock down ports, and monitor usage. Once a business passes roughly ten to fifteen devices, the unmanaged box starts costing more in troubleshooting time than the managed one costs to buy.

Do I need VLANs in a small office?

Usually, once you have anything you would not want a guest device touching. Guest Wi-Fi, security cameras, VoIP phones, and card readers all belong on their own segments. It costs nothing extra at configuration time and it limits how far a single infected machine can spread.

Why do our phone calls break up when someone uploads a large file?

That is almost always a QoS problem, not an internet-speed problem. Without traffic prioritization, a big upload and a voice call compete on equal footing and the call loses. Configuring QoS on the switch and firewall gives voice packets right of way, and the fix is usually the same afternoon.

Can you reuse our existing switches?

Often, yes. We check whether they are managed, whether the vendor still ships firmware for them, and whether their PoE budget and uplink speed match what you are asking them to do. Gear that is still supported and correctly sized gets reconfigured rather than replaced, and we tell you plainly when a switch is genuinely past its useful life.
